Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the most visited national parks in the country — and during peak season, the roads and trailheads get packed. To protect the park and make sure every visitor actually gets to enjoy it, the park uses a timed-entry reservation system during the busiest months.


Think of it like a reservation at your favorite restaurant — except the view is about a million times better.


Here’s how it works in 2026:

  • Timed-entry reservations are required starting May 22, 2026
  • Reservations are tied to specific entry corridors and time windows
  • They’re released on recreation.gov — and they go fast
  • Without a reservation during required hours, you won’t be able to enter the park


Which Areas Require Reservations?


Timed entry reservations are required for Rocky Mountain National Park, but the timing depends on which area you’re entering.


Here’s how it works:

Bear Lake Corridor (most popular proposal locations):

Includes Bear Lake, Dream Lake, Emerald Lake, and Lake Haiyaha.

👉 Reservations required from 5:00 AM – 6:00 PM


All Other Areas of the Park:

Includes areas like Trail Ridge Road, Upper Beaver Meadows, Fall River, etc.

👉 Reservations required from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM


If your proposal is planned at locations like Dream Lake or Emerald Lake, you’ll need to secure a Bear Lake Corridor reservation, which is the most competitive and in-demand.


Planning ahead here is key—these passes go quickly, especially during peak season.


If your dream proposal spot is anywhere near Bear Lake (and honestly, why wouldn’t it be?), you’ll need to plan ahead and snag that reservation early.


The Secret Windows: Best Times to Enter Without the Stress

Here’s a little insider knowledge — timed-entry requirements don’t apply all day. There are two golden windows that savvy visitors (and proposal planners!) use to their advantage:


  • Early morning: Arrive before timed-entry hours kick in and you can enter freely. This also means softer light, fewer crowds, and a more intimate, magical atmosphere. Chef’s kiss for proposals.
  • Late afternoon: After timed-entry hours end for the day, the park opens back up. The golden-hour light at this time? Absolutely stunning in areas that aren't shaded early.


Both windows are genuinely beautiful times to be on the trail — and they’re the windows I always recommend to couples I work with.
